Architectural (dimensional) shingles are roughly twice as thick as 3-tab, carry 130 mph wind ratings vs. 60–70 mph, and last 30–50 years vs. 15–20. The cost difference is usually under 15% of the project, which is why we install architectural shingles exclusively on full replacements.
Sometimes, code allows metal over one layer of shingles in many jurisdictions, which saves tear-off cost. However, we always inspect the deck first. If there is any soft decking or trapped moisture, covering it would void the warranty. We will give you an honest recommendation either way.
We rarely recommend it. A second shingle layer hides deck damage, traps heat that shortens shingle life, adds 2–3 tons of load, and voids most manufacturer warranties. The tear-off portion of a replacement is a small fraction of the cost, and it is the only way to inspect your deck.
Poor ventilation cooks shingles from below in summer and causes ice dams in winter, it is the #1 hidden roof killer we find. Every SkyShield replacement includes a balanced intake/exhaust calculation and ridge vent installation, which is also required to maintain your manufacturer warranty.
Yes, with conditions. Modern adhesive strips need temperatures above 40°F to seal properly, so in deep winter we hand-seal every shingle, it takes longer but installs correctly. Emergency repairs and tarping run 365 days a year regardless of weather.
It depends on foot traffic, sun exposure, and budget. TPO offers the best cost/reflectivity balance for most retail and warehouse roofs. EPDM excels where hail and abrasion are concerns.
